If you drive, there’s always a chance that you’ll be in a collision or traffic accident. In fact, insurance surveys show that around 77% of drivers will experience an accident – and, while most accidents are minor, it is crucial to be prepared. Here are a few things you can do to prepare yourself.

  • Keep a Collision report form in your vehicle, along with your other important documents. With it, you can collect all vital accident information.
  • Rule 1 of any traffic collision is to stay calm – even minor accidents can be overwhelming.
  • Carefully check for moving traffic before exiting your vehicle – be sure the accident environment is safe. Call the police and determine whether an ambulance is needed.
  • Gather your registration, license and insurance card.
  • If the vehicles can be moved, pull off the road to a safe well-lit spot, clearing the roadway. If it is safe to do so, take a few photos of the vehicles before moving them.
  • Do not argue, admit fault, or discuss the accident with others at the scene. Use your phone to record all damage to all involved vehicles and property at the scene.
  • Take down pertinent information, including license plate numbers, names and phone numbers of all involved parties as well as any witnesses.
  • Be sure to exchange insurance information with other drivers – you can also ask a police officer how to obtain an accident report.
  • The process to getting your vehicle back on the road can now begin.
